MAGICAL MANTI
Leopoldplatz, Berlin, performative installation, 2023, 3 inflatable objects, several augmented reality. Dimensions of the inflatables: 6 x 2.9 x 2.8 m, 3.4 x 3.6 x 3.4 m, 6.8 x 2.7 x 1.9 m
MAGICAL MANTI is a performative installation consisting of three large inflatable objects developed with an image-generating artificial intelligence, and a swarm of objects floating in augmented reality.
The prompts emerged from on-site research. Multiculturalism, intense interaction, poverty, and a strong presence of heteronormative masculinity were the starting points of the artistic examination.
The goal of the work is to open the viewers’ eyes to new forms and new possibilities - also through the use of technology and mixed media. Throughout the process, I used AI as an unpredictable dialogue partner to open up new perspectives on unfamiliar shapes.
The installation exists both physically and digitally. The objects are big, soft and inviting to the touch. They reappear – with different skins - in augmented reality, visible through an app on tablets and smartphones.
Together they inhabit the public space and elude clear definitions. They suggest that everything is in flux, that boundaries should be blurred, and invite us to accept everyday contradictions—to embrace complexity and weirdness.
The work reimagined a multicultural Berlin square - or any other place really - as a space for queerness, utopia, and diverse lifestyles.

At the opening, performer Elias Kurth was the first person to encounter the objects on the square, making them tangible and exposing their tenderness: He handled them with care, in a soft attempt of coexistence.
